Herne the Hunter Greetings Card by Karen Cater

£2.40

Herne the hunter is an avatar of the Celtic horned god, Cernunnos. He is associated with male animals, the stag in particular and is a god of fertility and of vegetation, as the lord of the forest.

The text included with this card reads:

The antlered giant Herne is the leader of the Wild Hunt, a ghostly rabble seen to gallop across Windsor Great Park at times of national clamity, lit by the full moon.

Herne the Hunter is associated with the Celtic horned god Cernunnos, the Lord of Beasts. His emblem is the oak tree, and in Windsor Great Park there is an ancient tree which bears the name 'Herne's Oak'.

It has also been suggested that Herne might be the spiritual precursor of Robin Hood.

Karen Cater is fascinated by the esoteric or mystical qualities of her subject matter, incorporating layers and levels of meaning into her compositions by her use of correspondences of imagery or colour, breathing life and identity into old song titles or figures from mythology or history.

Herne is depicted wearing the antlers of a great stag. He is considered a great hunter who possessed divine skills. Herne’s antlers connect him to the deer, which was given a position of great honor. Legends tell that he carried a great horn and a wooden bow, riding a mighty black horse and accompanied by a pack of baying hounds. If someone crossed his path, they were swept up in it, and often taken away, destined to ride with him for eternity.
