Bast is one of the most recognisable goddesses of ancient Egypt. Thought of as a cat goddess, she originally had the head of a lion and it was not until the New Kingdom (1570 BC - 1070 BC, arguably the zenith of ancient Egyptian civilisation) that she tends to appear represented as a domestic cat. She personifies the grace, playfulness and cunning of a cat, but another aspect stresses the power and ferocity of the lion.
