Oak King Tile Box

£12.95

A square box featuring an art tile by Anne Stokes. These are wooden boxes with a smooth black finish, and they open up with a good quality hinge. The inside of the box is lined with black soft velvet effect material. The lid has smooth rounded edges and the ceramic art tile is neatly inset into it.

Oak King is Anne Stokes' imagining of a green man character, and features oak leaves and acorns. The oak tree, due to its size and longevity, is a powerful, life-affirming symbol.

There are accounts that trace the word "druid" to duir, the Celtic term for the oak. More interestingly, the actual translation of duir is "door" and lore indicates the spiritually advanced Celts would access the ethereal planes of higher thought (psychic vision or soul-thought) by "opening the oak door."

The box is 125mm (5 inches) square and 73mm (2 and 7/8 inches) high.

The Celts and Druids held trees to be very sacred, especially the Oak, which was an important symbol in their religion. They believed that the Oak represented the World Tree, which ties all three worlds together. Their highest branches reach into the Upper World, their trunks lived in the Earth World and below their roots were passageways into the Underworld. The Druids also revered the Oak as a steadfast and hearty tree that represented the immortal soul.
