Colour: Orange

Physical Body: Lower abdomen, large intestine, bladder and
reproductive organs.

Symbol: Six red petals and a white, blue or silver crescent
moon representing the water element and flow of emotions.

Supportive crystals: Carnelian, Citrine, Orange Calcite, Cherry Opal.

Svadistana in Sanskrit means ‘sweetness’ and this chakra is commonly known as the sacral chakra. It is the second energy centre located below the navel and above the pubic bone. One of the key functions of this chakra is detoxification at both a physical and spiritual level. Because it is connected with the element of water it has the characteristics of the flow of water, of cleansing and movement. Not only is this chakra the key focus for experiencing pleasure it is also affected if we experience pain. Chi or life energy is gathered in this area and therefore its function is to maintain the flow of life.

If this chakra is unbalanced it can cause constipation, sciatica, fertility problems, irregular or painful periods (girls only, obviously!). Our balance can also be affected. The sacral chakra’s job is also to ensure things keep moving so an unbalance here can cause rigidity of the joints such as in arthritis.

Causes for an unbalanced sacral chakra can be due to stress, shock or trauma and also lack of close physical contact as a child. Emotional dependency or over-sensitivity are also the result of an unbalanced sacral chakra.

A positive aspect of this chakra is that it is responsible for creativity which is a natural state of life-energy.

To energise this chakra:
Use the colour orange as much as possible. Take up Tai Chi. Do something creative such as drawing, painting, playing music, dancing. Belly dancing is particularly important for re-energizing this chakra. Be spontaneous, explore play. Do something that makes you happy. Enjoyment is very important to this chakra. Perform the Wu Chi exercise detailed below.

Wu Chi exercise:
Hold this posture for 2 to 5 minutes and gradually increase over time. Stand with your feet apart, directly in line with your shoulders. Let your hands hang loosely by your sides and allow your shoulders to drop. Imagine your whole body is hanging by a thread attached to the top of your head, suspending you from the ceiling. Allow yourself to relax, ensure your knees are not locked but that they are very slightly bent. Breathe normally in through your nose, out through your mouth. Notice the tensions in your muscles and the internal chatter in your mind. Let them float away.
