death the fool's journey - contributed by Anya Gascoine
This is one of the most feared and misunderstood cards in the major arcana (in fact, in the entire tarot deck). The title of the card conjours up literal interpretations, which in a tool that is entirely made up of symbolic and allegorical meanings is both out of context and way off the mark! If you have ever had death in a reading, you will know why this card is not one to be feared, and if you have had the misfortune of having a reading where the reader misinterpreted the card as literal death then hopefully The Fool's encounter with Death will help to ease your mind, and reveal its true meaning. Often this card is renamed in decks in order to remove the fear factor - it can be called “rebirth”, “release” and “new beginnings”. These are closer to the true meaning of the card but exclude the aspect of the meaning that is central - a sense of ending or change in order to then move to the new beginnings it signals. Death is necessary in life; however, due to the natural fear of death and everything it means to us as humans, it can be very difficult to take on board the positive aspects of this word. When The Fool encounters death, he has just been involved in an experience forcing him to look at life in a whole new way, sacrificing his cosy outlook with the Hanged Man. Now he finds himself being faced with the ultimate change - an important part of his experience comes to an end, and he must let that go in order to move on. Death then is the card of ultimate change. Throughout life we go through a variety of experiences, encounters and relationships which at some point come to an end. These endings are as feared as death itself, as they often involve upset and pain. Letting go of something that has been a big part of your life is always difficult whether it is something you want or something forced upon you. The Death card asks you to look beyond the ending to the new beginning it inevitably brings with it, the rebirth. So when the death card appears, be prepared to let go of old energies and embrace new experiences as the next phase of your life begins.
