The Devil is another of those “scary” cards, filled with perceived meaning that has a lot more to do with the ancient Church trying to denegrate the pagan religion than any real portents of doom. That is not to say though that The Devil is a nice card - it is, however, a necessary stop on The Fool’s journey as it deals with the darker side of our lives, the things we’d often rather not face.

When The Fool meets The Devil, he finds himself in bindings that he is unable to remove. His initial response is to blame The Devil; it's all his fault that he cannot get out of the situation and nothing at all to do with any actions or decisions made by The Fool himself. It is then that he sees there are others in the same predicament, and these people all have chains burdening them too. The chains however are not tight, neither are they immovable. In fact there is no reason at all why the victims cannot simply take the chains off and walk away.

It is then he realises that it is not The Devil holding him here, but himself, or rather the thing in his life that he is chained to.This can represent anything that we become unhealthily attached to - an addiction such as alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, gambling etc, or a destructive relationship or shame associated with sex, or other behaviour. All these things tie us up in knots inside as we struggle to overcome our own inner demon, and more often than not find ourselves losing the battle.

When The Devil arrives in a reading it is time to take notice of the problem and face it head on as it has become all encompassing and is affecting your life to such an extent that it is limiting your inner journey. By facing what The Devil represents head on, and acknowledging that it is there in your life you take the first step, just as The Fool does. Once that step is taken you can then learn how to manage the problem, and remove the chains.
