The Emperor is the paternal card, the loving but firm father who rules the roost, and takes care of everyone in his domain. This is a card that can be seen in two ways. One is the controlling aspect of a patriarchal society. Equally, though, this is the card of firm but fair leadership, and although the emotions and passion of The Empress are not within this card, there is still a strong sense of love and nurture, though delivered in a far stricter way.

When we receive The Emperor in a reading, we need to ask ourselves several questions. Are we being too controlling over something, or is someone controlling us? Have we dealt fairly in a situation or could we have been less strict and more compassionate? Also consider what leadership skills are required or are being employed around you when you see The Emperor. Are they effective or not?

The Emperor has the gift of clear sight, so he can see clearly through any veils, or misguided attempts at subterfuge. He can solve any problem and therefore represents logical thinking and straightforward solutions to problems. Although The Emperor can solve problems, lead effectively, control with a firm but fair hand, he will never actually get his hands dirty himself. Rather he will delegate his rule on to others to perform on his behalf, as befits every ruler.

This is where a certain amount of antagonism lies with many interpreters of The Emperor - after all, surely the best way to lead is by example and not by omission? However, The Emperor is but an archetype - he does not have to be actively involved in everything he represents and indeed mental clarity and decisive delegation is as much a virtue as hands on action.
