The Heirophant appears as an indoctrinator, educator, mentor, teacher, religious leader and cultural guide. His energies lie in leading the way to the right path; although this may not necessarily be the right path for The Fool or indeed you, it is the accepted path of social practice. Therefore, The Heirophant has both positive and negative indications depending on where and how he is placed in a reading, and many people find him difficult to relate to, and sometimes completely block his message.

When dealing with this card, think about him as someone who has information that is imperative for your development, and that regardless of whether you follow his way or not, the knowledge you gain from the energy he presents is essential for your growth. Equally, the acknowledgement that in social conditioning comes confinement, and repression is a valuable insight.

When you feel blocked in a venture and The Heirophant appears, look at the number of potential options he is guiding you towards - are you in need of a mentor? Do you need to learn something new about your culture? Have you been limited by a specific religious belief? Is there a strong cultural commitment you must make that is in opposition to your chosen direction? Also, what could you be repressing as a result of your religious, cultural or social background? Have you ever been made to feel that you should not, must not or can not follow a specific path because it is in opposition to fundamental doctrines?

On the plus side, this card is also telling you that having a structure to follow can help in understanding what makes you tick, and understanding where you come from in terms of culture, beliefs and social conditioning can help you learn more your own ideals and what has formed you in your formative years to create the person you are today. It is sometimes very valuable to allow the Heirophant to lead the way rather than rebel against him.
